Youth Cycling for Climate

“YC4C – Youth Cycling For Climate” is a project between Swedish NGO Global Playground Stockholm and Ucarli Youth Organization from Turkey financed by LSU – The national Council of Swedish Youth Organisations. The project is focused on urban development and more specifically on cycling development and what would be a role of NGOs and young people participation to influence and work together with local and municipal authorities to make a change and make the cities more attractive, inclusive and healthy for people.

The main goal of the project is to empower, engage and educate youth, including those in disadvantaged areas, into environmental questions.

The expected results of the project are as follows:

  • Trained young environmental activists from Turkey;
  • Increased awareness about sustainable transportation such as bikes and their environmental benefits compared to cars;
  • Developed plan for environmental campaign promoting cycling development in the Ankara university campus;
  • Increased recognition of both NGOs among their target audiences;
  • A new network between Swedish and Turkish youth NGOs.

On 28 August the project will start with a team-building session that will connect the NGOs and provide the partner with interactive tools for youth work. During a week in Stockholm, the project team will visit and discuss with some of the active Swedish organizations that work with environmental questions and focus on youth. This will be done to learn from best-practice solutions to engage youth in sustainable development. Film viewing ”Bikes & Cars” by Filmmaker Fredrik Gertten will provide partner with ideas for creative bottom-up solutions for bike movement in different part of the world. Workshop on creation of successful campaigns will finalize the training part of the project by giving hands-on skills in engaging youth in environmental questions.

During the creative exchange session, NGO Global Playground Stockholm and Ucarli Youth Organization will address sustainable transportation in Turkey. The participants will together map the problem and design the campaign in the Ankara university campus, which Ucarli Youth Organization will carry out in October.
