  3. Gender equality and the Istanbul Convention: one decade later!

On 20th March 2021, Turkish president announced Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention treaty with a presidential decree which was met with concern both domestically and internationally. Istanbul Convention is a human rights treaty that aims to prevent and eliminate any type of violence and discrimination against women.

This panel will be held with the aim to shed light on the current situation in Turkey regarding the gender related violence and how recent events affected it.

In this context, this panel will also be an opportunity to discuss the broader effects of Turkish withdrawal, best practices for prevention, as well as discuss the constraints and challenges that have held back progress in eliminating violence against women in the private sphere.
